HOW TO CHOOSE MY MUAY THAI GLOVES

Whether you’re new to Muay Thai and looking for your first pair of Muay Thai gloves or a regular
in the gym just looking for an upgrade on your next set, here at Fairtex Canada we have a range
of options to choose from.
Founded in 1985, Fairtex has developed a reputation as one of the greatest Muay Thai brands
in the World.
The premium quality products, produced in Thailand, have been endorsed by some of the
greatest Muay Thai fighters in the World, such as Muay Thai legend Yodsanklai.
Fairtex has also been the long-term gloves partner of leading global martial arts organisation,
ONE Championship.
When it comes to choosing the right kind of gloves for your Muay Thai training however, with so
many options available it can seem like a daunting task.

Which size Muay Thai gloves should I wear?
When first shopping for Muay Thai gloves, you may find the size options slightly confusing.
Muay Thai boxing gloves generally come in 10oz, 12oz, 14oz and 16oz. These sizes are a
direct measurement of the weight of the padding in the glove and not the hand size.
Generally the hand compartment size differs between brands. The Fairtex Universal Gloves
hand compartment has a “tight fit”, offering a snug fit for most average sized hands. The weight
of the glove however, will differ depending on your intended use.
Most Muay Thai gyms in Canada will ask students to have two sets of gloves. 10oz or 12oz for
Muay Thai pad work and bag work, and 16oz for Muay Thai sparring.
Pad work is a great way to drill techniques, and therefore a smaller weight such as a 10oz,
similar to what you’d wear in competition, is a good choice.
In sparring, you’re simulating fighting without intending to hurt your training partner, therefore
the heavier, more padded 16oz gloves are preferred.
Having said that, gyms understand that two sets of Muay Thai gloves isn’t an option for
everyone, therefore ask students to opt for 12oz or 14oz which can be used for both pad work
and light sparring sessions.

Should I wear lace or velcro Muay Thai gloves?

The next option you should consider is either lace-up gloves or velcro strap. Lace-up gloves are
the more traditional style and the preferred option for professional competition due to the
flexibility to get a more snug fit.
Velcro Muay Thai gloves are the most popular choice due to the ease of putting on and taking
off between different training drills.
That’s not to say you can’t use lace-up gloves for Muay Thai training, but Velcro will make your
life inside the gym a whole lot easier.
